Earlier this year, we travelled to Sicily for some sun and a nice holiday. After a bit of searching, we decided to spend time near Mt Etna, in a village, and in a rural area. This review is for the second part of the trip where we stayed in Le Lumie, a B&B in Modica, a beautiful city.
Reservations were made via email with responses from the owners’ daughter, Fedica. She helps with the reservations and caretaking of English-only speaking clients. Fedica was lovely and wanted to make sure all of our questions were answered and anything we needed was provided.
Location – We arrived with instructions to call Fedica. We did so and she came to lead us back following her on her motorbike. We never would have found the house without her help so it is very important to arrange for this when staying. GPS was not helpful for this location.
Cars cannot drive all the way to the B&B so guests must park a bit away and carry luggage. It is not a terrible climb but should be considered if travelling with a lot of heavy luggage.
Rooms are in a separate building separated from the owners’ home by a courtyard.
The 3 rooms are quite close together. The middle one has a balcony overlooking city and is worth requesting. The rooms are modern and clean with specials touches like additional shelving in the closet for suitcases. The bed was comfortable and the balcony a nice touch. Between the 3 rooms, there is a shared kitchenette with a refrigerator, mini bar, and dishes/cutlery for guests’ use. This is perfect if you want to chill a bottle of wine or keep a mouth-watering dessert from one of the patisseries.
Courtyard – It is a well-kept courtyard garden area with multiple seating areas for 2. Filled with bergamot trees, which look like lemon trees, it is a peaceful area of the B&B perfect for having a pre-dinner drink or for an afternoon snooze while reading a book.
Breakfast – The quality and quantum far exceeded my expectations and was much more than we could eat. Fresh, hand-squeezed juice, freshly made coffee of your choice, pastries, croissants, fruit, assorted jams and spreads. One morning, we had breakfast in the courtyard and another, in the kitchen area. Both were served with such care.
Internet – only possible in the courtyard and a bit spotty at times.
Le Lumie is run by lovely people who were quite keen to ensure an enjoyable stay. Nothing was too much trouble for them from making dinner reservations at local restaurants to giving recommendations of things to do in the village.
If ever in Modica, we would definitely stay again.
Whilst in Modica, be sure to visit a chocolate shop as they are known for it great chocolate products. We visited Antica Dolceria Bonajuto – Corso Umberto I 159, (in front of the Duomo di San Pietro) and particularly like the cannoli, the sea salt chocolate, and the chili chocolate. Only wish I would have brought home more!
